WASHINGTON, Feb. 1, 2024 - Vanee Foods, a Broadview, Ill. establishment, is recalling approximately 9,564 pounds of chicken flavored base product due to misbranding and undeclared allergens, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The product labeled as chicken flavored base may actually contain beef base, which contains soy and wheat, known allergens, that are not declared on the product label.

The product labeled as chicken flavored base, which may actually contain beef base, were produced July 26, 2023, and packed inside cases labeled as beef base. The following products are subject to recall [view labels]:

  • 1-lb. plastic tubs labeled as "Sysco Classic Chicken Flavored Base" with lot code 02673 and packaged in a case labeled as "Sysco Classic BEEF BASE CF" with lot code 02673 represented on the label.

The product labeled as chicken flavored base and subject to recall does not bear a USDA mark of inspection. However, the product subject to recall is packed in cases that bear establishment number "EST. 19339" inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to distributors in Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia for further distribution to restaurants.

The problem was discovered when the recalling firm notified FSIS that they shipped beef base product that may be incorrectly labeled as chicken flavored base.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in restaurants' dry storage. Restaurants that have purchased these products are urged not to serve them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution lists will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.
