Pick the right agency

Which agency should you report to?

The agency depends on what kind of product caused the issue.

Why report?

Reports drive recalls and protect others

Federal agencies rely on consumer reports to detect emerging hazards. A single report can trigger an investigation that leads to a recall, a public alert, or a product redesign. Reporting is free, takes a few minutes, and is one of the most effective ways to prevent injuries to other consumers.

  • Recalls often start with consumer complaints. Agencies pattern-match reports to identify defects.
  • You can stay anonymous in most reporting flows.
  • No lawyer required. You do not need legal help to file a report.
  • It's free. All federal reporting tools are free for the public to use.
If someone is hurt

Emergency vs. report

If anyone is having a medical emergency right now, call 911. Reports to federal agencies are for tracking patterns, investigating defects, and triggering recalls — not for emergency response.

For poisoning, call the Poison Control Helpline at 1-800-222-1222 (24/7, free, confidential). For acute food-poisoning symptoms, see a doctor first, then file a report once you are stable.
